Social norms and economic incentives in firms

چکیده
This paper studies the interplay between economic incentives and social norms in firms. Our main focus is on “efficiency norms,” that is, norms that arise from workers’ desire for, or peer pressure towards, social efficiency for the workers as a group. In a simple model of team production and linear contracts we examine the possibility of multiple equilibria, and whether too strong economic incentives may knock out more efficient norm-based equilibria. We also consider partnerhips, complementarity in production, stochastic production, heterogeneity among workers, and alternative incentive schemes including relative-performance pay.

This paper challanges the view that weak work norms in generous welfare states makes them economically unsustainable. I develop a dynamic model of family-transmitted values that has a laissez-faire equilibrium with strong work norms coexisting with a social-insurance equilibrium with weak work norms. While the former has better incentives, the latter induces more intergenerational occupational ...
متن کاملEconomic Incentives and Social Preferences: A preference-Based Lucas Critique of Public Policy
Policies and explicit incentives designed for self-regarding individuals sometimes are less effective or even counterproductive when they diminish altruism, ethical norms and other social preferences. Evidence from 51 experimental studies indicates that this crowding out effect is pervasive, and that crowding in also occurs. A model in which self-regarding and social preferences may be either s...
متن کاملDoes CEO pay dispersion matter in an emerging market? Evidence from China's listed firms
This paper examines how the institutional features of emerging economies (i.e., government ownership, political connections, and market reform) influence CEO pay-dispersion incentives. Consistent with our expectation, we find that CEO pay dispersion generally provides a tournament incentive in China's emerging market, as it is positively associated with firm performance. In addition, tournament...
